# POST /v1/broadcasts

> Send one message to many people on one channel — prepared, screened and paced like a broadcast from the panel.

Starts a broadcast: one message, filled in for each person, to many people on one channel. OMNI prepares it — checking every number, skipping people who opted out, asked not to be contacted or may not be reached on this channel — then sends it at the channel's pace, now or at `scheduled_for`. It is the same broadcast the panel sends, and shows there too.

<Note>Needs the `broadcasts:write` scope.</Note>

## Body

| Field | Type | Required | Notes |
| :- | :- | :- | :- |
| `channel` | string | Yes | `sms`, `whatsapp`, `rcs` or `firetone` (Voice) — one the account has and has set up. |
| `name` | string | Yes | What the broadcast is called, here and in the panel. Up to 200 characters. |
| `content` | object | Yes | What the channel sends — below. `{{tags}}` in it are filled per recipient. |
| `audience` | object | Yes | Who it goes to — below. One kind of audience per broadcast. |
| `purpose` | string | No | `marketing` (the default) or `transactional`: which consent it is checked against. |
| `scheduled_for` | string | No | An ISO time to send it at, from 2 minutes to 30 days ahead. Now when left out. |

`content`, per channel:

| Channel | Fields |
| :- | :- |
| SMS | `text` — the message; `sender` — one of your sender IDs (your default otherwise). |
| WhatsApp | `template` — an approved template's name; `language` (default `en`); `params` — its `{{1}}`, `{{2}}`… in order. |
| RCS | `template` — an RCS template's name or id, approved on your bots; `values` — its variables by name. |
| Voice | `ivr` — one of your published outbound IVRs ([GET /v1/calls/targets](/api-reference/calls/targets)); `caller_id` — one of your numbers; `values` — what the IVR says back, by tag. Needs your own Voice organisation. |

`audience`, one of:

| Kind | Fields |
| :- | :- |
| Recipients | `recipients` — up to 10,000 `{ "to", "values" }`: a number with its country code, and the text for each `{{tag}}` for that person. |
| Saved contacts | `contacts` (up to 500 contact ids), `segments` (up to 50 names) and `numbers` (up to 500 more numbers), in any mix. A contact's name, number and fields fill `{{tags}}`. |
| A saved audience | `audience` — an audience's id, with Customer data. |

Send an `Idempotency-Key` header to start it once however often the request is retried.

## Response

`201 Created` — the broadcast, `preparing` while its audience is read. Follow it with [GET /v1/broadcasts/\{broadcast\_id}](/api-reference/broadcasts/get), or the `broadcast.*` [webhook events](/api-reference/scopes-and-events#webhook-events).

## Errors

Every refusal is `{"error": {"code", "message", "field"}}`; `field` is there when one input is at fault.

| Status | Error code | When |
| :- | :- | :- |
| 400 | `invalid_request` | Something in the request can't be sent: `field` names `name`, `content`, `audience`, `purpose` or `scheduled_for`. For example a `{{tag}}` nothing in the audience fills, a template that isn't approved, more than 10,000 recipients, or two kinds of audience at once. |
| 400 | `channel_unavailable` | The channel isn't one the account has, isn't set up, or can't be broadcast to. |
| 403 | `scope_missing` | The key doesn't have the `broadcasts:write` scope. |

Any request can also be refused for its key, its account or its rate (`key_required`, `invalid_key`, `account_suspended`, `plan_excludes_api`, `address_not_allowed`, `rate_limited`); see [the overview](/api-reference/overview).
